The seminar is dedicated to illustrating the (increasing) phenomenon of environmental migration under the legal lens. After reporting the linguistic difficulties in defining who is an “environmental migrant”, the analysis will focus on the existing legal instruments at international and regional level in order to verify to what extent they guarantee a certain degree of protection to those migrating for environmental reasons. Finally, special attention will be deserved to the case Teitiota v. New Zealand ruled by the UN Human Rights Committee dealing for the first time with a complaint filed by an individual seeking protection because of environmental concerns due to climate change.
