S.O.S. MOBILITY – Smart and/Or Sustainable Mobility: when is smart mobility sustainable for consumers and SMEs?

PRIN 2022 - September 28, 2023 – September 28, 2025

Principal Investigator: Prof. Chiara Alvisi

The research project aims to assess the sustainability of electric and
connected mobility for consumers, citizens, and SMEs, following the human-centered approach
outlined by the European Commission in the «Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy: putting
European transport on the right track for the future» (COM (2020) 789). This strategy promotes a
green and digital transformation of transport while ensuring the protection of fundamental rights and
energy stability.
The analysis will focus on the concepts of "smart mobility," "sustainability," and the "sharing
economy," delving into the legal issues related to fundamental rights protection, such as energy supply
security and the right to free movement. Additionally, the project aims to explore the role of
renewable energy communities, as included in the Italian National Recovery and Resilience Plan
(PNRR), as a pillar for the energy transition. The expected outcome is a feasibility study for the
development of energy communities as an essential condition for a future of sustainable and secure
mobility.
The research team is divided into two units - the Bologna Unit, led by Prof. Alvisi, and the Palermo
Unit, led by Prof. Ippolito - and is composed of experts in law, economics, electrical engineering, and
computer science. The research team will analyze the necessary conditions for sustainable innovation
in private mobility by integrating multidisciplinary expertise.
