Legal, ethical and social challenges of the Forensic DNA Phenotyping in Italy

PRIN 2022 - Settembre 2023-settembre 2025

Forensic DNA phenotyping (FDP) refers to the use of genetic data to predict an individual's physical characteristics (such as hair color, eye color, skin color, ancestry, and other traits) for investigative purposes. FDP offers promising opportunities but also raises ethical, technical, and legal challenges. The project aims: 1) to verify the knowledge of the potential outcomes of Forensic DNA Phenotyping (FDP) for appearance, age, and ancestry prediction, and to evaluate the awareness of Italian civil stakeholders about the  benefits and risks of FDP,  considering the ethical, social and regulatory aspects of this new investigative tool;  2) to develop and validate genetic and epigenetic tools based on massively parallel sequencing (MPS) technology for the combined analysis of FDP  in the  population of North, Centre and South Italy, still lacking FDP genetic data.
